What the city of Rio tries to ignore...

Behind these luxurious apartment buildings and condominiums lie squatter communities, called "favelas" in Portuguese, which contain some of the world's worst poverty and violence. (I will have some better photos in the weeks to come) Walking among the affluent-rich to the under privileged poor, I have noticed a common trend among the citizens of Rio de Janeiro. Everyone seems to fear some person or organization. Be it the police, the drug traffickers and bosses of the "favelas", or the combination of the two, these people do not seem comfortable in their own city. My research is at its infancy, so I expect many great things to come in the following days and weeks.
